It is estimated that about 10% of the population is left-handed, but waiter's corkscrews (corkscrews in general) for left-handed people are very hard to find. Almost no one sells them. Popotamus now offers corkscrews from Pulltap's Classic 500 series and Slider 900 series, which have a one-handed foil knife. On a left-handed corkscrew, the spiral is twisted in reverse compared to the standard models. When the spiral is reversed, left-handed people can screw the spiral into the cork by turning their wrist outwards, i.e. counterclockwise. This is the most efficient way to screw the spiral into the cork, as in this direction of movement you press the corkscrew handle with your thumb. Corkscrews from the Spanish company Pulltap's are well-known and loved by waiters and bartenders. Pulltap's is located in the Spanish city of Sabadell, which is a little north of Barcelona. All corkscrews are manufactured at Pulltap's own factory in Sabadell. In 1996, Pulltap’s invented the double lever for waiter’s corkscrews and this small improvement, which Pulltap’s has patented, is a huge improvement on the traditional waiter’s corkscrew. It takes much less force to pull the cork when there are two steps in the lever and the risk of the cork breaking is also significantly reduced because the pull on the cork is vertical during the entire movement. The spiral is Teflon-coated and it is therefore easier to screw the spiral through both corks and synthetic corks. The spiral is also longer (55 mm) than on many other corkscrews and has 5 twists. The length combined with the many twists means that the spiral has a good grip on even the longest corks and there is less risk of damaging the cork during opening. The lever has a built-in capsule opener that can be used without having to turn the lever out. The corkscrews’ handles are made of powder-coated steel. The lever is made of steel and double nickel-plated to protect against rust. All corkscrews in the Classic 500 series have a small serrated stainless steel knife built in, which is used to cut the foil that covers the cork. The small knife folds out like a pocket knife. There is a groove in the knife that you insert a nail into and then fold out the blade. The blade must be folded back in after use. All corkscrews in the Slider 900 series have a small serrated stainless steel knife built in, which is used to cut the foil that covers the cork. The small knife in the Slider 900 models is operated with one hand. The knife is pushed out with the thumb and remains locked in this position so that the blade can be used. Once the foil has been removed, the next step in opening the bottle is to fold out the lever and when the lever is folded out, it pushes the small knife, which is automatically retracted into the corkscrew handle again. It's pretty smart and you don't have to worry about broken nails or being nervous about cutting yourself on the little knife. The corkscrews are very sturdy and can last for many, many years in a private household. Countless copies of these corkscrews have been made. A few of the copies are good, the majority are bad. At Popotamus we sell the original corkscrews, which we import directly from Pulltap's in Spain and the price is amazingly low when you consider the quality and function. |
